Paint in progress by Francisco Sanchis Cortés | Kindertotenlieder (Songs to the dead children) is a cycle of songs, about twenty minutes long, for Gustav Mahler's voice and orchestra. The songs take their lyrics from poems by Friedrich Rückert. The songs were written in the post-romantic Mahlerian language, the mood and feeling they express are appropriate to the title and the text. The final song ends in D major and in a mood of transcendence. It is one of Strauss's largest non-operatic works; the score calls for about 125 players and a typical performance usually lasts around 50 minutes.
